Fair Lady has been a regular visitor to Pendennis over the past 20 years, with her initial visit in 1996 involving a complete renovation to restore her to her former glory. Based in the STP facility in Palma de Mallorca, Pendennis Palma’s recent refit projects include the 1992 Va Bene, the 26-metre ketch Velacarina, with new arrivals Mavana and Lionheart.

The yacht, which came fifth in SuperYacht World’s poll of the Top 40 Classic Superyachts in 2011 (Issue 20), is available for charter through Burgess from €56,000pw.

Superyachts have often had cameos in the movies but seldom anything like this. The yacht is just off the Miami shoreline and there’s a production barge alongside, as well as three US Coast Guard boats patrolling off, ensuring everyone’s safety and keeping curious spectators away. As well as the celebrities and the celebrities’ people there’s the film crew – 50 in all. It’s a major operation and a logistical nightmare.

But the team behind SG Private Wealth Advisors, the family office that oversaw the build of Arianna and is responsible for her charter career, had no hesitation in accepting. “In January, John Cichanowicz at Burgess asked if we’d be interested in having Arianna feature as the centrepiece in a photoshoot with the new Fiat 500, Pitbull, Charlie Sheen, and the Italian singer Arianna,” says Dovi Frances, president of SG Private Wealth Advisors. “I said yes right away, as I saw a great opportunity to align Arianna with a world-renowned brand such as Fiat, and to exhibit Arianna to an extremely wide audience.”

It’s SG Private Wealth Advisors’ philosophy that “a superyacht has to be treated as a super-brand”, and with this in mind it has been operating Arianna successfully as a charter yacht for her owners since launch and when this opportunity presented itself it was too good to miss. “Having a beautiful vessel in a sea of superyachts for charter and sale isn’t enough,” says Frances. “While it’s important to be aggressive and competitive when it comes to pricing, it is also important to realise that pricing can’t be and shouldn’t be the only tool we have in our arsenal.”

For the photoshoot to happen they had a time window of just 30 days to get everything set up. Behind the serene face of all great brands, of course, there is an army of people peddling furiously, and this case was no exception. “We had John at Burgess, Arianna’s captain Mark Lacey, Fiat’s production and legal teams, and our attorney working on negotiating a contract and on figuring out a location for a two-day shoot that would work for all parties,” says Frances. And, amazingly, it all came together. Production at first wanted to shoot in front of a coconut grove but Arianna’s draught was too great for the shallow waters close in. Gaining Coast Guard approval was a challenge, as was the proviso that the vessel couldn’t move while there was shooting on board. “And production insisted that we had a floating barge attached to Arianna so that the crew of about 50 had a base,” Frances says.

The culmination of all these efforts started early on a morning in March off Miami as Arianna was repositioned alongside the production barge and the Coast Guard deployed their vessels to patrol the production area. Around noon, the director, producers and dancers started arriving, and following them at 2pm were two tenders full of celebrities – Pitbull, Charlie Sheen, Shaggy, singer Arianna, and NBA star Tristen Thompson. “They were all extremely professional. There were zero interruptions and the cameras just kept rolling,” says Frances.

It was a two-day shoot, and one benefit of having Arianna as a platform was that there was a ready-made place of entertainment. “At the end of every production day we hosted dinners on board. Arianna’s chef Stuart Ince made Polynesian-inspired dishes and we enjoyed ourselves immensely while listening to Charlie Sheen sharing some funny stories from the set of Two and a Half Men. On the second night we had Juanes, a famous Colombian singer, and Arianna perform a duet together in front of a small group of friends – a song that will be released in a few months,” says Frances.

The demands of a film crew presents its own logistical thorns. Provision had to be made for proper lighting and ensuring there was ample power. An additional difficulty came when production said they needed more footage of the yacht as a backdrop, so another day with Arianna was scheduled to get some running shots of the yacht. And yet it all came together. “The deal had a lot of working parts, but the results were everything we hoped for,” says Olivier Francois, president and CEO of the Fiat brand worldwide. “Arianna was not only the perfect backdrop for our shoot, but also the perfect partner for our campaign. It exudes everything our brand and campaign is about: modern design, blending form, function and a pride of ownership that is genuine.”

Even the film production team – a notoriously tricky section of the population to keep happy – were impressed. “Arianna is an excellent centrepiece to our production. Filming aboard her and working with her management and crew was a seamless experience that we’re certain will shine through in the final cut,” says producer Justin Diener.

Arianna is certainly a unique case among superyachts, marketed in a way that is focused on getting the best for the owner in a competitive charter market. It’s not that the method is in competition with brokers, but it means getting the name of the yacht out into a wider world beyond the cocoon of the superyacht industry. “We want Arianna to be known worldwide. We want charter clients to come to their brokers and ask specifically to charter Arianna,” says Frances. There is, though, no rest for this film star. She has a busy charter season ahead with repeat bookings from last season and new clients ready to enjoy her.

The exhibition, which is entitled ‘Heavyweight History’ and is curated by Ewa Gorzadek, is a major retrospective of the Berlin-based artist’s most important works from 1992 to 2012. His work synthesises film, photography, sculpture and objects. The exhibition runs from June until August 25.

She’ll clearly be a yacht that is great for entertaining: the formal dining area takes 16, expandable to 20, and the yacht has five guest suites along with an extensive owner’s area, which includes a study, two dedicated children’s cabins and panoramic views from the main suite. The deck area forward is meant for the owner’s use but it can be configured as a helideck. There are many options for guests throughout, including a main deck library, a cinema, gym, massage room and sauna. Crew accommodation (which boasts 15 cabins) also includes room for a nanny.

The interior, which has also been designed by Nuvolari-Lenard, is described as “eclectic contemporary”, and they point out that: “Everything has been designed on this yacht” – from the bespoke tenders to the crew uniforms. The owner’s captain Paul Bell has overseen the project from the start, along with Robert Moran of Moran Yacht & Ship. For more images, click here

Anthony Sands of Edge Yachts, who has represented the owners on the project from the early design phase, says that Sea Owl is “a true work of art and quite possibly the most customised 62-metre yacht ever built”. The owners’ vision for the yacht called for complex technical specifications, including an extraordinarily sophisticated security system that both yard and owners’ team regard as possibly the most elaborate ever built into a yacht. The interior, also by Andrew Winch, is described as “breathtakingly beautiful” by Sands. Few details have been released but the yard says it contains a detailed selection of hand-carved pieces, sculptures, petrified wood items and marble.

Captain John Watson, who has spent the last year at the yard, describes the build at Feadship as “an enlightening and extraordinarily professional experience”. He adds: “There is a wonderful family atmosphere and it has been fabulous to work in a yard with craftsmen who have applied their skills to Feadship for decades. More importantly, perhaps, I believe that the owners have also very much enjoyed the design and construction process. It takes very special skills to transform such a vision into a solid structure, and Feadship have succeeded in doing so with flying colours.”

Amels Limited Editions 180 Engelberg

Around 400 guests gathered at the Amels yard to celebrate the launch of the latest 180, which was on schedule to deliver at the end of May. The interior is by Enea, the Swiss landscape architect and interior design firm, who worked in close collaboration with Mrs Inga Jacobi. The project was managed by Ocean Independence.

Benetti 56-metre Lady Candy

Launched this month in a private ceremony was the steel and aluminium is the 56-metre Lady Candy. The project was managed by Central Yacht. We’ll bring you more on the yacht as images emerge.

Heesen Crazy Me

The 50-metre Crazy Me has hit the water at Heesen’s yard. The radical lines are from Gary Grant Design, who met the owner’s brief for something radical and challenging. The interior is by Cristiano Gatto, while the owner’s representative was SuperYachts Monaco. Sea trials in the North Sea are scheduled, with handover in June.

Perini Navi Seahawk

The first yacht in Perini Navi’s 60-metre series is Seahawk, which has been launched at its Viareggio yard, followed by the stepping of the mast. The aluminium hulled yacht boasts a variable-depth keel, which allows for a draught between 4.3 and 12.3 metres. The interior is by Christian Liaigre.

Pershing 115

The tenth hull in Pershing’s hugely successful range launched this month. Inside there is an owner’s suite and three guest suites, while all the yacht’s domestic systems can be controlled by iPad and iPhone. With twin MTUs driving waterjets, there should be a decent turn of speed.

 Heliad II

The 33.4-metre Heliad II, with exterior styling by Diana Yacht Design, has been launched at Lynx Yachts. The canoe stern gives the yacht a very pleasing appearance on the water.

The conning area is configured with an elevator, while the forward spaces are dedicated to a split-level owner’s suite, offering a shaded deck area and a private lounge. There are another eight VIP suites as well as a cinema room, a library and a gym. On deck there are folding terraces to open up the internal spaces and a pool on deck (the bottom of which raises when the boat dives). Specially strengthened glass in the hull means a great underwater view when the water is clear enough. She’s designed to reach a depth of 240 metres. Crew areas are on the decks below the guest areas.

There are undoubtedly a host of technical challenges to overcome before the Migaloo becomes reality, but the next time one of the world’s navies is upgrading its fleet, there may be one or two interested superyacht owners looking at a conversion. For more images click here:
