Andreas Liveras, founder and chief executive of Liveras Yachts, was tragically killed in the Mumbai terrorist attacks in November. He was dining at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel when the attacks happened. Liveras, 73, has not always been a yacht owner. He emigrated from Cyprus to London when he was 28, and began working for the Fleur De Lys bakery as a delivery driver. When the owners retired, he bought the company and built the business up, selling it to Express Dairies in 1985 for an eight-figure sum.
Too restless to enjoy a quiet retirement, he bought a 25-metre yacht and launched Liveras Yachts, growing it into a hugely successful charter business. Liveras Yachts currently own Lauren L and Alysia but over the years his fleet has included Princess Sophia, Princess Tanya, Rosenkavalier, Annaliesse and Altair among others. Superyacht World contributors Captain Michael and Frances Howorth knew Liveras well, having once been asked to take on the role of captain and purser on board one of his yachts. He will be sadly missed by all.
